and managing hearing loss

lipreading

Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss classes provide a welcoming, supportive environment where individuals with hearing loss can connect, learn together, and build practical communication skills. These classes offer more than just theory—they’re a space to share experiences, explore strategies for everyday situations, and develop confidence in lipreading.

About the Training

Each class is designed to be relaxed, friendly, and inclusive, using a combination of PowerPoint presentations, written prompts, and visual aids. Where appropriate and possible, a second screen is used to display all spoken content, ensuring no one is left behind. Repetition is always offered, and lessons are adapted to meet learners' needs. Classes typically include a short break, giving participants a chance to get to know one another and build community.

what to expect

The full Lipreading course spans an academic year and follows a rolling programme. While the core theory remains the same, the materials and teaching topics vary each year, making every term unique.

  • Students are asked to commit to one 10-week term at a time

  • Course content includes both lipreading theory and practical exercises

  • After each theory session, a written summary is shared for reference

Some learners find a single term provides all they need; others continue for multiple terms or longer. The flexibility of the programme means it can be tailored to each participant's progress and interests.

Lessons are highly interactive and structured as follows:

  • Introduction and explanation of lipreading theory relevant to a specific group of sounds or letters

  • Practical exercises to reinforce understanding, which may include:

    • Lipreading the tutor without voice

    • Working in pairs to lipread one another

    • Reading aloud (without voice) sentences that are either themed, random, or based on prose

Previous lesson topics have ranged from how igloos stay warm, chinchilla facts, and Holy Island travel stories, to seasonal poems—all chosen to keep sessions interesting and engaging.

Throughout the term, participants also receive:

  • Coping tactics and strategies for managing hearing loss

  • Group discussions on related topics, which are always supportive and informative

  • A strong sense of community and shared experience, often leading to long-term peer support

Joanna brings over 30 years of experience teaching adults and has been supporting people with hearing loss throughout her career. Her lipreading classes are shaped by a deep understanding of hearing loss and a strong commitment to building confidence, community, and practical communication skills.
