about Joanna

Known for creating a positive, friendly, and fun learning environment, Joanna offers engaging and supportive classes that build confidence and promote better communication and understanding between Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals. Her courses in Lipreading and managing hearing loss not only enhance practical skills but also support emotional resilience and self-advocacy. Her Basic BSL course introduces the beauty of sign language in an accessible 10-week format, and her Deaf Awareness training challenges assumptions and encourages deeper insight into the lived experiences of Deaf and hard of hearing people.

With over 30 years of experience working with Deaf and hard of hearing people, Joanna is a dedicated and passionate trainer specialising in Lipreading, Basic British Sign Language (BSL), and Deaf Awareness. Since 1994, she has managed a number of Deaf Centres, providing vital information, advice, and support services, and has used her deep knowledge of communication and hearing loss to empower others through a greater understanding of the issues. She continues to do so as a trainer.

She qualified as a Lipreading Teacher in 1995 and is a long-standing member and Chair of the Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults (ATLA), adhering to their code of ethics and professional standards. She holds a Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language and has used BSL extensively in her work with staff and clients over three decades. Her Award in Education and Training Level 3 was renewed in 2019, underscoring her commitment to high-quality adult learning.

Based in North Bedfordshire, she delivers face-to-face training across much of the East Midlands and also offers highly successful online sessions via Zoom, with automatic subtitling features that enhance accessibility—especially for lipreading instruction. In addition to running her own independent classes, she works with North Northamptonshire Adult Learning and Rothsay Education Centre in Bedford.
