Joanna Steer

I have worked with Deaf and hard of hearing people since 1994 and have managed Deaf Centres providing information, advice and support services.

I have over 30 years experience training adults and renewed my Award in Education and Training Level 3 in 2019.

I qualified as a Lipreading Teacher in 1995 and have used the knowledge gained throughout my career. I am a member of the Association of Teaching of Lipreading to Adults (ATLA), following their code of ethics and practice.

I have used BSL to communicate with staff and clients in my management of Deaf Centres for 29 years and have a BSL level 3 certification.

I am based in North Bedfordshire and offer training in most areas of the East Midlands and am able to provide lipreading, Basic BSL classes and Deaf Awareness Training where required.

I provide face to face classes. But will also teach/train online as an alternative means of delivery. This has proved to be enormously successful for all topics related to Deafness. Zoom includes an automatic subtitling facility that is useful when teaching lipreading as it ensures that learners can understand and participate throughout.

As well as offering classes independently, I work with North Northamptonshire Adult Learning and Rothesay Education College in Bedford.
